The sun may provide the body with vitamin D, but it can cause severe damage to the eyes. Changes to the ozone layer give ultraviolet light the opportunity to cause growths and cataracts. Eye cancer can also develop from years of unprotected sun exposure. If you want to protect your eyes this summer, follow these tips.

How to Safeguard Your Eyes From UV Rays

1. Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat

Wear hats frequently, especially those with wide brims because they provide the most protection. Wide-brimmed hats shade the entire face and head, including your ears and neck. If you don’t want to wear a hat all the time because it gets too hot and uncomfortable, at least wear a visor.

2. Avoid the Sun During Peak Hours

Stay out of the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., which is when UV rays are the most powerful. If you can’t avoid the sun during these hours, stay in the shade as much as possible and wear your wide-brimmed hat. If you aren’t sure how strong the sun is, use the shadow test; if your shadow is short, the UV index is high.

3. Invest in Quality Sunglasses

4. Take Extra Care at the Beach

Sunlight reflects off of water and makes it more intense. Whenever you visit the beach, wear your hat and sunglasses, use sunblock, and remain under an umbrella when you can. Even if it’s a cloudy day, it’s still important to protect yourself against UV-related issues, like cataracts and eye growths.

5. Get Contact Lenses With UV Protection

Inquire with your optometrist if you’re eligible to wear contacts with UV protection. Since UV protection ratings can vary, ask to wear class one lenses to provide your eyes with the best defense. You should use sunglasses even if you get contacts with UV protection since they don’t shield your eyes from glare.
