The idea of this buzz generated in my mind while reviewing Edward de Bono’s Six Hats Thinking Technique. Each color of the hats represents a mode of thinking. I drew them in the image below.

Ask 5 whys Reversed Golden Circle

Rainbows appear in seven colors because water droplets break white sunlight into the seven colors of the spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Why six hats and not seven hats as rainbows have seven colors? Why use the white hat knowing that it breaks to other colors? What colors can we add to the hats to complete the rainbow of thinking?

The above-mentioned questions developed into other questions. Questions are the pillars of thinking. We developed the 5- whys questions from the why question. We branched the what question to what, so what and now what and these three questions are the columns of reflective thinking. We introduced The Golden Circle to accommodate the why, how and what questions. I represent these questions in the figure below to show the interactions of questions that govern our thinking and color it with different colors.

L What

Why

< “How

The question of starting the golden circle from the circumference (what question) inwards to reach the why question might not lead to the same result as proceeding from the core why question towards the what question. This is because of the hysteresis loop formation as is shown in the image below. For explanations, you may refer to my post here.

The hysteresis of the Golden Circle

In all above-mentioned question the color of senses is absent. Senses precede our thinking and influence it. Therefore, the introduction of the OTHER Loop by Rod King, Ph.D. was a welcome contribution. OTHER is an acronym for Observe, Think, Hypothesize, Experiment, Reflect. You can see that reflect is the last stage of thinking in this loop.

Ali Anani, PhD

The time to be spent on each “layer” of the OTHER loop was discussed by me on LinkedIn. I proposed a Fibonacci-based arrangement of the five blocks of the OTHER Loop as the image below demonstrates.

e7321cb3.jpg

The Fibonacci-based loop suggests that the maximum time should be devoted on reflecting what we have done before. The presentation generated great discussions and it deemed of interest to me to represent it here for possible more fruitful discussions.

Our senses and discussions interact and shape our thinking. It is the understanding of this complexity that shall guide us to new discoveries and observing emerging phenomena.

Your thoughts are valued.

Roberto De la Cruz Utria- your comment is very important. You bring the idea that we may keep going back between the five blocks of the spiral. Yes, you are correct. We might find from experimentation that we need to go back to hypothesis and modify it. It is a living process and one block may feed the next blocks or the previous ones. It also says that we don't need to be perfect before moving forward because we are experimenting and refining. Your comment is well-appreciated.

Yes, the leader needs the different thinking colors and then how to compile them for focusing. I love your thoughts here. You opened up new possibilities for discussing leadership.

I fully endorse your comment. It opens new venues to understand the role of leaders. I believe this is a great outcome of these discussions.

A ps. to #27 , is keeping in mind that we produce rainbows for customers. When the process breaks down then the team starts creating their own rainbows out of self preservation or intrest. The leader is the one who can place each member on a the rainbow of colors based on strengths and self interest. This maximises output towards the customer and not the individual team members.

Unlike the sun that naturally produces the spectrum of colors a leader must produce each one according to the needs of the team and company. Your hats and fractals describe what the leader needs to ensure is produced. Again within the group dynamic. The leader themselves should already know the hats and fractal concepts. This is what they base their facilitation of the group on. The leader is to lay out each color of the spectrum so that each team member can show their diversity and strength within a single color. Once each color has been vetted we can then assemble the rainbow to see if it will be reflective of customer needs.

I am diving in your thoughts. I may say you provide a good explanation of first diverging and then converging and this way the leader may examine all possibilities. Like the whit light it diverges into seven colors, but a leader will act as the lens to focus them.

I would suggest that when groups come together, in the beginning, they may all be heavy with a hat they are wearing or the fractal area 5 being different letters. Given the diversity we want within a meeting, even those we may not agree with, it is important that we all speak from the same position. If we are to attempt to be intuitive within our thinking as a group based on a fractal area 5 being reflective, then the leader must moderate these positions. The key is not eliminating any of the hats or the fractal based on our own priorities/personalities. The team will then know and feel safe to join the discussion at each paradigm the hat and fractal offers. They know their expertise or personality perspective will have its turn at the hat they have strength within the fractal area being reviewed. I see the various process charts and positions as group specific. Again i am thinking from a leader perspective. This makes a large assumption. Leaders already know the graphics you are presenting and now they have to facilitate the group. The graphics apply language that can be used that is reasonable for folks to consider in presenting their thoughts. It dissects thoughts into their relevant pieces. In the end we can put it all back together. This dissection helps the leader not get solutions or end games from each individual all at once. The leader ensures that each diverse strength is heard, exposed and discussed. Now we can start on solutions. The obvious opposite of this is "going off half cocked".

I shall watch the video as it sounds very interesting. Your two comments add wealth to my next buzz because I am discussing the focal point of a spiral. I am keen to absorb your comments here. I don't disagree, but the focal point could be Observe in section !. I am comparing our thoughts.

In astronomy the latest telescopes use a mirror that is in some way flexible. I don't quite understand the technology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5Q_48eW1V0 The secondary use of this flexibility is to use a laser and tune the mirror. In leadership we need the laser to help us understand where things are out of focus. The hats and the fractal show us how to adjust our own reflective mirror in dialogue to the team. In hopes that the actions of the team will render images that the customer can use and execute around. We start from our own shadow and spiral outwards to include the team in hopes we have a solution that a customer will respond.

Is this a very interesting comment Harvey Lloyd. I am questioning the feasibility or the better the possibility that all team members wear the same hat. Them we may go for a hat with another color. You make the question more lively if the person has a hat different than his shadow hat. I am studying your suggestion to place O in the section 5. This way we have a reverse spiral or downward spiral. This is a hugely-important point as I am elaborating on this fractal in my next buzz.

Really liked the "Hat Model". Certainly i can choose a hat and think in the vain of the hat selected. What also became clear to me was that what if each person in the group is wearing a different hat? Leaders should surly recognise within the group, we all need to have the same thinking hat on while looking at actionable items to a problem or issue. I also thought about how our own personality types might bend us to a preferred hat when in risk settings. The creative thinking hat would be one for me that i don't feel comfortable in, while i enjoy all the others in varying degrees. I also liked the way you used the fractal to describe a process. Very tangible. I have to go back to my pie picture and state that what happens when you have four or five of these fractals playing out in the same conversation? Some may spell other backwards within the fractal. Placing O in section 5. This is where leaders can use your fractal in ensuring that all are on the same page of the process.

That you for sharing the link to your great buzz Deb🐝 Lange, Brand Ambassador @beBee. I advise readers of this buzz to read yours. What brought the idea of the rainbow in my case is noticing four shared colors between the rainbow and the Six Hat thinking mode . This is a proof that senses provoked my thinking and it is color in my case.

I fully concur with your beautiful comment. As if I anticipated this comment. If you would read my response to a comment on this buzz by Dr. @Rod King on LI you shall find that I mentioned you and your great book "Trust Your Senses". Your questions are validated and sensing is faster than thinking. Senses influence our thinking. This means shifting the initial position of our thinking and this may result in taking different thinking paths. I agree with you and that the OTHER Loop refer to Observation at its starting point propelled me to advocate it. In my next buzz I shall give more proofs.

This s a relevant comment and reflects on my next buzz dear Claire L Cardwell. The buzz will give support from nature on the validity of the Fibonacci spiral and will discuss its effect on the flow. So, it is relevant that you mentioned flow in your great comment. I thank you also for sharing the buzz.

Thank you Bill King and the inconsistency of color resulted because I reproduced an old version of the OTHER Loop. Great suggestion and I shall consider it. Dr. Rod King wrote a great comment on LinkedIn (shared there as well). I am copying it here for your reference. A great visual metaphor, title, and posting. Thanks Ali Anani, PhD for sharing. As always, you awaken "dormant" cells in our brain with your provocative questions and deep insights. I like your statement that "Questions are the pillars of thinking." Do allow me to paraphrase it as: "Questions are the pillars of deep thinking." And thanks for the mention regarding the OTHER Loop. I appreciate it. I'd like to clarify that when I use the word, "Observe" for the "O" in OTHER, I'm using it in the sense of "Perceive." Consequently, "Observe" as in the sense of "perceive" involves all our senses: seeing; hearing; feeling; smelling; and tasting. I usually use the acronym of VAKOG (Visual; Auditory; Kinesthetic; Olfactory; Gustatory) when comprehensively referring to "Observe" or "Perceive." If I'm to extend the description of the first habit of the OTHER Loop, it would read: "Visually, Auditorily, Kinesthetically, Olfactorily, and/or Gustatorily (VAKOG) Observe Different." I hope my aforementioned statement clarifies my use of the word "Observe" in the OTHER Loop. Also, I'd like to say that I use "Different" in the sense of "different from the traditional or classic situation." In other words, I use "different" as in "Blue Ocean.

The basis of the OTHER LOOP is still one way of looking at the Scientific Method but its weakness is trying to predicate this thinking as what others are not thinking or doing. The history of human existence has shown that great thinkers tend to evolve around the same time periods, so Socrates, Confucius and Buddha all emerged in a relatively short window. The rise of the first major civilizations occurred independent of one another but in surprisingly similar ways. It is our hubris that makes us think that our thinking is original but all thinking has its basis on standing on the shoulders of the great. When we celebrate genius we are celebrating something way off the norm - but here the reality is that unless there is a genius hidden among us that history will pluck out we work with the norm. The Bible has an incredible chapter called Ecclesiastes which is thought to be written by King Solomon and in it, it declares "that there is nothing new under the sun". I look at the Book of Ecclesiastes as one of the earliest thoughts about emergence and here I can draw the line with the theory of evolution, and the compatibility between this odd couple comparison is how thought has evolved and how innovation bubbles with next step transformation, not because our thinking was like no other, but we are simply celebrating those who were fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time as evolution ran through them and others at a similar stage - so we do not see isolated transformations but transformations that are mirrored in their birthrights.

A great thought Jerry Fletcher. I mentioned in the buzz the need to link thinking to our senses. Since publishing this post my mind has been busy searching for this issue. I have come out with some "strange" observations, which II plan to share in my next buzz.

Jerry Fletcher

Dr. Ali, An interesting series of approaches to fashioning a look at the process of thinking. I love the idea of color being used to characterize methods but it leads me to consider synesthesia--the connection of other senses so that each color has a distinct sound or smell or feel or taste or all the above. Perhaps only someone that has this weird problem can truly think. Or, is someone who cannot.

`Thank you and you show us the way to think creatively. The Green Hat designed for creativity has an expanded meaning now. Yes, the linkage between creativity and fun is solidly elaborated in your comment. I believe people think while they have fun, but also they initiate the O of the OTHER Loop. May be Observe can be substituted with sonsing to include all our senses. But then the Other will be meaningless (SOTHER).

Your comment is glorious Zacharias 🐝 Voulgaris. The complexity of thinking makes it dependent on the initial starting point. If we start with why we may end up with a different conclusion than when we start with what, to give one example. I may call this The Butterfly Effect of Questioning. As you noted, ifwe have many forms of thinking such as divergent thinking, convergent thinking, complexity thinking, design thinking, reflective thinking and the list goes on. What is amazing is the omission of senses and imagination in all of them. That is why the OTHER loop deserves our full attention.

Zacharias 🐝 Voulgaris

Interestingly, Simon Sinek talked briefly on this topic, focusing on the Why part of the thinking process. For him, we should always start with that, otherwise we risk creating a process or a product that may be technically adequate but fail to relate to the customers / users in a meaningful way. A similar idea was put forward by Viktor Frankl in his book "Man's Search for Meaning" while F. Nietzsche also said "someone who has a strong 'why' can withstand any 'how'!" It's good to see that there are equally valuable insights for what lies beyond the 'why' and how anOTHER approach to thinking can be beneficial too.
