Setting Realistic Expectations: Preclinical Years to Attending

Setting Realistic Expectations: Preclinical Years to Attending
Episode Introduction: “What can I expect?” is a normal question most people ask at the beginning of their medical training. And for many of us, there are guarantees that can be shared with others about what to expect at the beginning, in school, after school, and beyond. Tune in to learn more about what you should look for, what to expect, and how to bend but not break under pressure. Episode Summary: In today’s episode of POMA DOes… Vartan, OMS IV Lecom Seton Hill, sits down with two osteopathic students, an osteopathic resident and and an attending to have a discussion about expectations through the entire process of education and training to become a DO. Key Takeaways: A key part of pre-med is starting to learn to balance all your buckets without letting them overflow. Learning that life doesn’t pause because of the stress of school or the job and finding ways to balance that is a huge and important lesson to learn early on. Moving into 4th year brings a new set of challenges and experiences where you get to bring everything you’ve learned into practice. It’s important to look at all your rotations and consider the other aspects of the job you aren’t expected to perform before making your decisions. During residency, one of the best parts is the support system you have of other residents plus your attendings. Take advantage of that to learn and bounce ideas off one another. Even after you have become a practicing physician and found your niche, built the career you want, you are still constantly learning and need to reach out for support at times.    Find Us: Online: https://www.poma.org/ Email: poma@poma.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/POMADOs Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pomados/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/pennsylvania-osteopathic-medical-association/ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/POMA_DOs YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbxG9QqV_7Hv2CEkJsE89ZA App Store: search Pa. Venkat was elected in 2022 to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He's the first physician to serve in the General Assembly since the 1960s.
