Samaritans boss in plea for donations

SOURCES of finance for one local charity have virtually dried up and they are now entirely dependent on financial support locally.

The Guernsey Samaritans branch is appealing for donations from islanders to help ensure its volunteers can continue to support people struggling to cope during this critical time.

The States of Guernsey deemed the charity volunteers critical workers in supporting vulnerable people and the Samaritans is making every effort to ensure that they are able to provide the support to anyone in crisis.

Volunteers who are able to carry out shifts at the Guernsey branch are following strict guidelines on hygiene standards and social distancing.

Branch director Graham Hall said the charity had provided a listening ear to any islanders who need support for nearly 60 years.

This has been possible due to public donations.

‘Now more than ever, we need the public’s continued support,’ he said.

‘Due to the cancellation of our upcoming fundraising events and the closure of Mostly Books who support us, along with other local charities, we are facing a significant loss of funding.

‘So, we are calling on islanders to help us ensure that we continue to be here for anyone who needs support.’
